Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery or Eyebag Removal Surgery) – It is a surgical modification of the eyelid, it corrects wrinkled skin, drooping upper eyelids and fat bags below the eyes, features that can make you look older than you feel. This procedure can improve appearance and restore a youthful look to the face and more specifically to the eye area of the face. It can improve functioning of the eye and in some cases improve vision. It is commonly done for both men and women. It may be done as part of an overall treatment plan including other treatments such as a face lift, antiageing, contouring, botox etc.
Why is Blepharoplasty performed?
Blepharoplasty may be performed for either functional or cosmetic reasons. sometimes, an advanced amount of upper eyelid skin is present. This extra skin may protrude over the eye lashes and cause a loss of peripheral vision. The upper portion of the visual field are directly affected and the condition may cause difficulty in reading or driving. In such a case, upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed to improve the vision. Blepharoplasty is most commonly done as an elective surgery for cosmetic reasons. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is almost always done for cosmetic reasons. It improves puffy lower eyelid “bags”.
Procedure For Blepharoplasty
The surgery removes or repositions extra eyelid skin, fat and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Surrounding muscles and tendons may be reinforced if required. For the lower eyelids a fine incision is made just below the eyelash. For the upper eyelids a strip of skin is removed in the natural crease of the eyelid. Both eyelids can be operated at the same time. Patients should not smoke at all at least 1-2 weeks before and after surgery. It is normally done under sedation anesthesia, but can also be done under local or general anesthesia. Surgery takes 1-2 hours. Patients normally spend 1 night in clinic, but it is possible as an outpatient (home same day).
Stiches and bandages are removed within one weeek. Recovery takes around 5 to 7 days. It is recommended to stay indoors. You could get back to work in about one week, women can use makeup to hide bruises. Activity should be minimised for 3-5 days after surgery and strenuous exercise avoided for 2-3 weeks. For up to four weeks some bruising may be visible, eyelids may feel dry and the eyes may be sensitive. Sunglasses should be worn. Contact lenses cannot be worn for around two weeks. Scars fade with time to faint white lines and are not normally visible after around 4-8 weeks.
